Should I Fit Pickup Truck Accessories Myself?

You may wonder why I have decided to write an article about this subject but it is something that causes us the most issues as a pickup and van accessory supplier. Importantly they are issues than can be avoided.

Over 95% of the time when we have customers calling to complain that a hardtop is leaking or a tonneau cover is squeaking not only have they fitted it themselves but they have fitted it incorrectly. This causes the most amount of problems these days as due to selling on the internet people are not just round the corner, very often they are hundreds of miles away, so getting them to drive and have it fixed is difficult. Especially when they would rather blame the fault on the product rather than there own fitting.

I really don't want to sound like I am having a pop at our customers but really I'm not. We all do it though and I would be the same defending my wardrobe build or my shelf installation but when it boils down to it, once we calm down and reflect it is normally our lack of expertise that's causing the issue.

How can this be avoided?

Simple, drive to the supplier once, the first time, and have it fitted by a professional. We like many other pickup accessory suppliers make our money on the accessory itself and do not look to profit on fitting, just to cover our costs. That being the case our fitting costs are incredibly low at least less than half the price of main dealer fitting costs. If you have it fitted by the supplier should you have an issue with the item then either way it is the suppliers problem to fix it, as it is either a product failure, or a fitting issue and they have done the fitting so its definitely there problem.

If you do want to fit it yourself don't just jump straight in. Take the time to read the instructions then call and speak to a fitter to clarify any points you are unsure of and don't be scared to call again and again if you get stuck as it is better for all of us this way.

This may sound nuts but even if you have bought the accessory from somewhere else and you get stuck you are welcome to call and speak to us we will be happy to help and advise being honest your are then more than likely to order from us next time. We also have a bank of fitting instructions on file and maybe able to email you some for the product you have bought.

Pickup Truck Accessories

No matter what make of pickup truck you own, chances are you want to change it from the way the factory supplied it. Whether you use your vehicle for work, off-road play or some of both, you can find performance parts, accessories and customization products to make your pickup truck unique. When you want your pickup truck to look and perform better, accessories will help you customize it.

While it's possible to get some accessories from the Chevy, GMC, Dodge, Ford, Jeep, Mazda, Nissan or Toyota dealer where you bought your truck, you will find a much bigger selection of items online. You may also get better bargains shopping this way. Some popular makers of pickup truck accessories include Lund, Westin, Dee Zee, Outland, Auto Ventshade, Warn, Saddleman, Thule, PIAA, Vector, Wolo, Deflecta Shield, Pilot, Hoppy, Grizzly and Protecta.

Exterior accessories

There are many types of exterior pickup truck accessories to enhance the appearance of the outside of your truck. They include air dams, bras and masks, bug shields, bumpers, fender flares, graphics and emblems, grille guards, hood ornaments, hoods and scoops, mirrors, racks and cargo accessories, roll pans, running boards, splash guards, tool boxes, truck steps, tire covers, visors, wings and spoilers and wiper cowls. Select items that will complement your truck's basic lines and that will work well together instead of looking cluttered.

Interior accessories

Installing interior accessories is all about improving the comfort level when riding in your truck. Some examples are 12 volt accessories, cargo trays and liners, consoles and racks, dash covers and trim, door accessories, floor mats, horns, instrument panel covers, pet accessories, seat covers, seats and steering wheel covers.

How about adding some electronics to enhance your ride? Choices include CBs and scanners, cruise controls, GMRS radio, GPS and navigation systems, power inverters, radar and laser detectors, remote starters, security systems and antennas. You might also want to upgrade the standard radio that came with your truck to a stereo CD or satellite radio system.

Accessories cushion the load and improve the ride

Trucks are all about hauling things, so why not do it in style? Pickup truck accessories for your truck bed include cargo control, bed mats, bed liners, bed protection, bed rails, tailgate accessories and tonneau covers. You might also want towing accessories like hitch balls, hitch mounts, hitch covers, hitch steps, hitch wiring, hitches, tow hooks and straps, towing mirrors, winch accessories, winches and winch mounting systems.

By improving your pickup's suspension and brakes you make the ride both smoother and safer. To do this, you might need anti-sway bars, bars and arms, bushings and shackles, hubs, lift kits, lowering kits, shocks and struts, skit plates and trusses and springs. Adding more lighting not only improves the truck's appearance, it also improves safety. Some typical lighting pickup truck accessories are accent lighting, auxiliary lighting, back-up lights, bulbs and lamps, driving and fog lights, headlights, interior lights, light bars, light covers, light guards, marker lights, neon lighting, spotlights, taillights, tow lighting and wiring, turn signal lights and warning lights.

Electrical and exhaust systems are essential

If your pickup won't start, it doesn't matter how good it looks. If you've got this problem or fear it might happen, try buying alternator accessories, battery accessories, battery chargers, chassis wiring or jump start systems. If the problem is on the exhaust end, you might need catalytic converters, exhaust systems, exhaust tips and extensions, headers or mufflers.

To do all this work yourself, you'll need some tools and equipment. Useful items include tire pressure gauges, car care products, computer software, creepers and seats, diagnostic equipment, engine hoists and stands, garage and parking accessories, jacks, stands, ramps, paint, sanding materials and abrasives.

Improving a Vehicle With Pickup Truck Accessories

Large vehicles such as pickup trucks and 4x4s are becoming increasing popular due to the extreme weather conditions we are experiencing more and more of. While the government tries to discourage people from buying these types of vehicles by increased tax and fuel prices, the fact is that they are becoming increasingly necessary in this country and such, people are prepared to pay this extra money in order to be able to remain mobile during periods of freezing conditions and heavy snowfall.

Some pickup truck owners will go further than simply paying increased charges, they will often look to buy pickup truck accessories to make sure their vehicle looks and performs exactly how they want it to. These kinds of accessories can be found at various online stores where there is a huge choice of products at affordable prices.

Aside from those who want these types of vehicles, there are a lot of people who have no choice but to use these vehicles. They find cars too small, yet vans too unpractical in a sense that they cannot carry many passengers. So for people that want to go to work carrying equipment, tools and supplies around, then come home to transport their family, it offers the perfect solution to a day-to-day problem.

The problem is, to make this suitable for transporting families as well as tools and machinery and for being parked on a private driveway or roadside rather than in a secure work area, certain pickup truck accessories need to be fitted. For example, on a construction site, a flat bed pick up with lots of tools in the back might not be at risk but park that same vehicle on a driveway over night and the chances of those tools being stolen rises dramatically.

For these reasons, a lot of truck drivers choose to add the ultimate pickup truck accessory; tonneau covers. These covers are produced using a hard and durable material and act as a part of the body that covers the back of the truck up. This means that owners of pickup trucks can rest in peace, whilst their truck is parked outside.

People walking past will not be able to see what is inside the back of the truck. Better still; the securely fitted tonneau cover will deter thieves from bothering to attempt to steal anything. As far as value for money goes, these pickup truck accessories are worth their weight in gold. The great thing about these products is that they are readily available and owners do not therefore need to look far or hard to find the best deals on them.

Pickup Truck Accessories

Pickup trucks, whose primary function is hauling cargo, are giving even the luxury cars a run for their money in terms of space and luxury. These trucks can be fitted with various accessories to make the drive comfortable and relaxing. Accessories, though not basic utility items without which the vehicle cannot run, certainly add zing to the vehicles. In fact, the use of accessories has helped pickup trucks move beyond their basic function or utility of hauling crude construction cargo, for which they were originally designed. They are, in fact, out to compete even with the luxury cars.

With the advantage of space, the accessories aim at providing the drivers and passengers with facilities that even luxury cars are unable to provide. Taking advantage of this consumer preference, the manufacturing companies are now coming up with cab style pickup trucks to appeal to a broader spectrum of buyers.

The variety of accessories available for both the interiors and exteriors of pickup trucks is simply mind-boggling. You can only admire the ingenuity and inventiveness of the manufacturers of these items to woo the customers. The list of exterior accessories includes air deflectors, awnings and tents with back-up warming devices, beds of various types with bed extenders, bed liners, bed rails, bed rugs, mats, organizers, tool boxes, towing accessories, and so on. The list of interior accessories is by no means small, and includes arm rests, dusters, driving gloves, sun shades, steering wheel covers, consoles, dash kits, dash mats, dash replacements, and door panels.

If you want to buy pickup truck accessories, the best course would be to log on to the Internet. This will save you the necessity of driving down to various showrooms in your area. You can browse through the accessories sites to get an idea of what is available and at what rates. You can compare the prices and get the best bargains.

Outfit Your Pickup With sensible Truck Accessories First!

truck box Protection

Bedliners are a great choice to protect your priceless truck from scratches along with dents. They are by far the best investment for cargo box protection. If you were looking to buy a used truck along with the bed is dented, scratched and rust is already setting in would you care if your oil had been changed frequently? If you're like the majority you would figure that when the bed hasn't been protected then the remaining truck hasn't either. Bedliners are recognized with resale price guides being a added-value option meaning a truck dealer will give you more money on a trade if the truck has a bedliner inside it than if it does not.

Another value of having some sort of bed protection is in the way you use your vehicle. With a bare bed you must wrap stuff up in the blanket or towels to guard your paint from having scratched. What a ache! This all changes while you get protected, now you only "throw and go" and find on with business and don't get worried about your cargo slipping around scratching and denting.
Bed protection will come in many different flavors.

Plastic drop in liners are just about the most popular and they are usually great for dent protection but they're going to rub the paint in about one hundred different places just from your vibration coming from the truck when you're driving unless you then have a paint saver type connected with pad.
Bed mats are absolutely the most beneficial "bang for the buck" but they wont present you with front and sidewall protection and the tailgate piece is a plan. They do give anyone the protection where you'll need it most...the level. A bedmat wont caress the paint, they're easy for the knees and they're cheap!
Spray on bed liners are great if your bed is already scratched up. Spray ons are kinda pricey but you have a choice of colors
and spray ons are a great choice to protect against widespread chemicals. Independent tests demonstrate that Spray-On Bedliners tend to be resistant to most chemical compounds including chlorine, gasoline, diesel gasoline, bleach, and most loved ones solvents.

The new Dualliner is unique for the reason that it gives you the very best of both worlds. You have the bed mat within the floor and all its advantages and you also have the front, characteristics and tailgate protected. Its a fantastic product and they're shipable!

in case you are going to be with a tonneau cover or a camper shell then you might consider a Bedrug. the Bed Rug fits just like a glove. It's the cargo area liner of the long run. Your cargo never slides around inside bed. Truck show quality look. Tough protection for any truck bed. Provides a firm couch for fragile cargo while in the bed and similar to the polyurethane liners they are resistant to most toxins including chlorine, gasoline, diesel resource, bleach, and most home solvents.
